WHO ARE WE?

CALC is made up of people from all walks of life.  We are adults who are willing to embark on an exciting and challenging literacy journey.  The main requirements are that you be dependable, eager,  and willing to give a few hours a week to assist others in improving their literacy skills.

With this initiative, our goal is to promote great opportunities for those in need of literacy skills. With access to the right resources, people can become empowered by their own abilities and gain the confidence to fulfill their potential. Learn more about our work by getting in touch with our team today.

HOW DO YOU BECOME A VOLUNTEER?

Contact the Corinth-Alcorn Literacy Council and ask when the next training workshop will be held.  You will then attend a three-session workshop to receive certification as an adult literacy tutor.

As an adult literacy tutor, you may be called upon to work with a local resident who needs to either learn, or improve upon, reading and writing for everyday life. Alternatively, you might be asked to help a non-English speaking resident to learn English as a second language.

WHAT WILL YOU DO AS A TUTOR?

Help improve a learner's literacy skills using Frank Laubach materials, books, charts, and other items available for free through the Corinth-Alcorn Literacy Council.

Provide an atmosphere of respect and safety in a private setting.

Encourage students to take ownership of their learning experience through real-life literacy skills.

Pool both student's and tutor's knowledge through a collaborative learning experience.

Learning new skills, one step at a time!

WHY DOES ADULT LITERACY MATTER?

September 1, 2015

Why is literacy important? Literacy skills are critical for adult life! And they go beyond just knowing how to read and write. Research has shown that adults with high school level literacy skills get better jobs, have higher income and are healthier than those with lower skills.
